Cardiac surgery, or cardiovascular surgery, is surgery on the heart or great vessels performed by cardiac surgeons. Frequently, it is done to treat complications of ischemic heart disease (for example, coronary artery bypass grafting), correct congenital heart disease, or treat valvular heart disease from various causes including endocarditis, rheumatic heart disease and atherosclerosis. It also includes heart transplantation. Doctors also use heart surgery to Repair or replace heart valves, which control blood flow through the heart, Repair abnormal or damaged structures in the heart, Implant medical devices that help control the heartbeat or support heart function and blood flow, Replace a damaged heart with a healthy heart from a donor, Treat heart failure and coronary heart disease, Control abnormal heart rhythms.

Track 3: CAD/Ischemic Heart Disease

The supply of blood to the heart is affected during Ischemic Heart Disease or Coronary Artery Disease. In this condition, the blood vessels are narrowed or blocked because of the accumulation of cholesterol in their walls. This limits the supply of oxygen and supplements to the heart muscles, essential for proper functioning of the heart which may eventually result in a heart attack. As the heart acts as the pump that supplies oxygenated blood to the various organs, any defect in it immediately affects the supply of oxygen to the vital organs like the brain, kidneys, liver, etc. leading to the death of tissue within these organs and their eventual failure. Sometimes ischemic episodes may happen without knowing it. Ischemia without pain is known as silent ischemia. Such patients may have a heart attack with no prior warning.

Track 4: Congenital Heart Disease and Pediatrics

Congenital heart defect is a problem with the structure of the heart, which is present at birth. Congenital heart defects are the most common type of birth defects which can involve the walls of the heart, the valves of the heart, and the arteries and veins near the heart. They can disrupt the normal flow of blood through the heart which can slow down the blood flow, go in the wrong direction or to the wrong place, or be blocked completely. Many congenital heart defects cause few or no signs and symptoms until children become older. Many children with congenital heart defects don't need treatment, whereas others need treatment like medicines, catheter procedures, surgery, and heart transplants. The treatment depends on the type of the defect and its severity, child's age, size, and general health.

Track 5: Valvular Heart Disease

Valvular heart disease involves damage of one or more of the four valves of the heart (the aortic and mitral valves on the left and the pulmonary and tricuspid valves on the right). The mitral and aortic valves are the ones which are most frequently affected by valvular heart disease. Blood flows in normal valves with proper force in the proper direction at the proper time whereas in case of valvular heart disease, the valves become too narrow and hardened (stenotic) to open fully, or are unable to close completely (incompetent). As a result, a stenotic valve forces blood to back up in the adjacent heart chamber, while an incompetent valve allows blood to leak back into the chamber it previously existed. To compensate this poor pumping action, the heart muscle enlarges and thickens, thereby losing its elasticity and efficiency. The main factors for these conditions are largely as a consequence of aging, but may also be the result of congenital abnormalities or specific disease including rheumatic heart disease and pregnancy.

Track 6: Peripheral arterial disease

Peripheral artery disease (PAD) is a disease in which plaque builds up in the arteries that carry blood to the head, organs, and limbs. Fat, cholesterol, calcium, fibrous tissue, and other substances in the blood make up the plaque. The most common symptoms of PAD are cramping, pain or tiredness in the leg or hip muscles while walking or climbing stairs. This pain goes away with rest and returns on walking again. The condition where plaque builds up in the body's arteries is called atherosclerosis. Over time, plaque can harden and narrow the arteries which limit the flow of oxygen-rich blood to the organs and other parts of the body. People with peripheral arterial disease are at a higher risk of coronary artery disease, heart attack or stroke. If left untreated, PAD can lead to gangrene and amputation.

Track 7: Arrhythmias

An arrhythmia is the abnormal rhythm of the heart which may feel like fluttering or a brief pause. It may be so brief that it doesn’t change the overall heart rate (the number of times per minute that your heart beats). It can cause the heart rate to be too slow or too fast. Some arrhythmias don’t cause any symptoms whereas others can make the patients to feel lightheaded or dizzy. There are two basic kinds of arrhythmias- Bradycardia, when the heart rate is too slow (less than 60 beats per minute) and Tachycardia, when the heart rate is too fast — more than 100 beats per minute.

Track 8: Heart Disease & Failure

Heart Disease, also known as cardiovascular disease, is a condition that happens when the heart muscle becomes weakened. The primary heart muscle is extended and widened in this condition which results into heart disease. The weakened muscle suppresses heart's capability to pump blood and may prompt heart disappointment. Heart failure is a condition in which your heart can't pump enough blood to meet your body's needs. The term “Heart failure” doesn’t mean that your heart has stopped or it’s about to stop working. CHD can lead to heart failure by weakening the heart muscle over time. However, heart failure is a serious condition that requires medical care. Coronary heart disease can lead to heart failure by weakening the heart muscle over time.

Diabetic Heart Disease (DHD) refers to a heart disease that develops in people with diabetes. People with diabetes are more likely to have certain conditions, or risk factors, that increase the chances of having heart disease or stroke, such as high blood pressure or high cholesterol. Obesity is another major reason behind heart diseases. This is a chronic metabolic disorder associated with cardiovascular disease and increased morbidity and mortality. It increases the risk for heart disease and stroke. But it harms more than just the heart and blood vessel system. It's also a major cause of gallstones, osteoarthritis and respiratory problems. Hypertension, also known as High Blood Pressure, is a heart disease which refers to the heart conditions caused by elevated blood pressure in blood vessels. The heart working under increased pressure causes some of the different heart disorders.
